New-Condition Coverage Uncovered
What is new-condition coverage?
New-condition coverage is a new approach to pet insurance protection that helps keep your premiums lower over the lifetime of your pet. Don’t let all members’ past claims hike up your monthly costs at the time of renewal. With PHI Direct’s new-condition coverage, each policy year any conditions in prior policy years become pre-existing so that way you can stay protected without breaking the piggy bank.
New-Condition Coverage in 3 Simple Steps
Mark your calendar
From injuries to illnesses, if your pet encounters a new eligible accident or illness during the policy year, we've got their tail! Your pet's covered for that condition for an entire policy year.
Get reimbursed
At the time of enrollment, you get to choose your annual coverage – $5,000 or $10,000 – your choice! When an eligible claim is made, we’ll cover it up to your chosen coverage limit. PHI Direct coverage includes sick visit exam fees, taxes, surgery, cancer treatment, and more!
Start over with new conditions
Once the policy limit is reached, or your policy renewal arrives, we'll apply an "exclusion" tag to that specific condition for the following policy years, as this is now considered a pre-existing condition. Clean slate! But don’t worry – you’re still covered for new conditions that your pet might experience!
This approach to coverage helps treat your pet for all new qualifying accidents and illnesses for up to a year and keeps your monthly premiums affordable because coverage for any condition your pet has experienced in a previous year is no longer available.
We believe a pet guardian will be in a better position to budget for that ongoing care, as the large financial hits of unexpected vet bills are often due to initial treatment and diagnosis.
We’ve got you covered, and you’ll continue to have coverage – and peace of mind – that your pet is protected for the new potential mishaps and illnesses that can affect your pet throughout their lifetime in future policy years!
Not with PHI Direct.
PHI Direct's New-Condition Coverage completely avoids this by starting each policy year with a clean slate, so premiums stay low.
New-condition coverage helps your premiums stay lower year after year. So, why wait? Protect your pet with PHI Direct and let the tail-wagging adventures continue, worry-free!
Say goodbye to the unfair pricing of other providers and say hello to consistently lower premiums with PHI Direct.

If you're worried about long-term health issues, ongoing care or chronic conditions cropping up down the line, our new-condition coverage might not tick all your boxes. While it's great for the large financial costs of initial diagnosis and treatment of unexpected mishaps, it's not designed to handle ongoing health needs.
New-condition is a great, budget-friendly way to help ensure your pet is covered. Now that you have a better understanding of how new-condition coverage works, you can make the best choice for you and your furry friends! |
Importance of Understanding Pre-Existing Conditions
It’s important for pet owners to understand the concept of pre-existing conditions and how they can impact coverage under pet insurance policies. This helps manage expectations and allows pet owners to make informed decisions about their pet’s healthcare needs.

📌 FYI a pre-existing condition is any condition that occurred prior to the policy effective date or during the applicable waiting period. This includes associated or bilateral conditions. With PHI Direct’s new-condition coverage, at renewal any conditions claimed in prior policy years become a pre-existing condition upon renewal. This helps us keep premiums lower over the lifetime of your pet than other providers by only covering new unexpected illnesses or accidents.
Why do conditions that occurred while enrolled become pre-existing at renewal?
This unique approach to pet insurance coverage helps keep premiums low and the value high, allowing us to put more dollars towards paying invoices and claims to the PHI Direct pack of furry companions.

Are pre-existing conditions covered?
No, like most pet insurance providers, pre-existing conditions, including bilateral and associated conditions, are not covered. With PHI Direct, conditions in one policy year become pre-existing in the next, so only new conditions that arise after the policy start date each year are eligible for coverage
What happens if a new condition requires treatment beyond 12 months (or the end of my policy year)?
If a new condition requires treatment beyond the initial coverage period, it will be considered a pre-existing condition in the next policy year and will not be eligible for coverage. PHI Direct is here for your pet for the large financial costs often associated with diagnosis and initial treatment, which helps keep your monthly premiums lower on average. If a condition becomes chronic, we believe a pet owner will be in a better position to then budget for that ongoing care.
What happens if my pet gets a condition in the last weeks of my annual coverage?
Your pet will only be eligible for diagnosis and treatment of that condition for the remaining time left in that policy year and the remaining monetary amount of insurance coverage for that policy year. This condition will not be covered in the next year, as this will now be considered a pre-existing condition.
What are the coverage limits?
You can choose between two annual coverage limits: $5,000 and $10,000. This amount is the maximum total reimbursement you can receive in a policy year for new conditions. If you ever decide you want more or less annual coverage, you can switch during your renewal period – just reach out to our Care Team!
What is the deductible for new condition coverage?
PHI Direct’s deductible is low so you can start getting paid back sooner. The annual deductible for PHI Direct is $200. You pay the first $200 of your eligible vet bills each year before coverage kicks in and you start getting paid back.
Can I continue my pet’s coverage after the policy year ends?
Yes! Your pet’s coverage will automatically renew each year helping your pet stay protected for any of the new things they might experience in their lifetime.
Who is eligible for new condition coverage?
All cats and dogs in Canada are eligible for new condition coverage! Coverage is available in all Canadian provinces, excluding Quebec. Once enrolled, you can use any licensed vet in Canada – or even the U.S.!
