Autumn Pet Tips
Fall brings cooler weather, pretty colours, and fun adventures, but it also brings unique challenges for pet owners. Whether it's sudden temperature drops or the temptation of Halloween candy, pet guardians need to keep a close eye on their furry friends this time of year. Luckily, with fall safety tips for pets, it can be a season of fun, safety, and great memories.
Fall Pet Safety
1. Seasonal decorations
Fall decor is beautiful, fun, and festive, but not without risks. Be mindful of the seasonal decorations that could create an unsafe environment for your furry companion.
Pumpkins and candles: A curious cat or dog can easily knock over a candle or take a chomp out of a pumpkin. While most pumpkins are not toxic to pets, if they are carved or have been sitting out, they may form bacteria that are not safe for our pets. Candles being knocked over can cause a fire. Consider using flameless candles or place decorations out of reach of pets.
Pet-safe decorations: Be sure to get non-toxic materials for garlands and wreaths. Also, avoid using small pieces that can be easily swallowed by pets.
2. Seasonal hazards
Thankfully, we can control the indoor elements our pets can be exposed to. However, beware of hidden dangers as you and your pet explore the outdoors!
Fallen leaves: As much fun as a pile of leaves looks – and there’s nothing cuter than a pup pouncing through a huge one! – bacteria, animals, or sharp objects can be hiding underneath. Make sure to keep an eye out before your pup dives into a pile of leaves.
Toxic plants: With the leaves falling, mushrooms can start to grow which can be toxic to pets. Acorns also fall, which can be a choking hazard for pets. Keep your away from unfamiliar plants to avoid coming in contact with anything toxic.
Halloween candy: With Halloween around the corner, it’s important to keep in mind that chocolate and sugary treats are not safe for pets. Be sure to keep candy bowls out of paw’s reach and store them safely.
3. Cozy pets are happy pets
As temperatures drop and the crisp autumn air comes through, your pet may need some extra warmth to stay cozy. A perfect excuse to cuddle!
Cooling temperatures: Even with our pet’s furry coats, they can still feel cold. This is especially true for smaller breeds. Make sure they have cozy blankets for those cooler nights. You can always dress them up in a warm sweater!
Outdoor gear: Want to go for a fall hike? Protect your furry friend’s paws with boots. Boots will keep your pet’s paws warm and guard them from sharp objects like sticks or rocks.
4. Shorter days, routine changes
Changing seasons often cause a change in your daily routine – and your pet’s!
Shorter days: As the days get shorter, be sure your pet is still getting plenty of exercise. You may need to adjust your walk schedule to avoid dark mornings or evenings.
Darker days: If your walks do happen in dark mornings or evenings, make sure to use reflective gear or light-up collars to keep you and your pet visible.
5. Seasonal allergies

Ever wake up in the middle of the night to the soothing sound of your dog aggressively licking their paws? Just like us humans, pets can also suffer from seasonal allergies. Fall allergens like mould and pollen can cause discomfort for your furry friend.
Allergens: If your pet is showing signs of seasonal allergies, such as sneezing, watery eyes, or excessive licking/scratching, consult your vet. They can recommend treatment to ease your pet’s allergies.
Fall grooming: As the seasons change, pets shedding may change. Regular grooming can help manage this, and it can also help remove allergens trapped in their fur.
Be Prepared
Fall is a beautiful time of year and with a few extra precautions, you and your pet can enjoy the season with safety. Whether you’re hiking, carving pumpkins, or snuggling up by a fire, your pet can be part of the fun.
While you’re enjoying the season, don’t forget that budgeting for unexpected expenses like large veterinary medical bills can help bring predictability to household budgets in Canada and, most importantly, keep your dog or cat happy and healthy.
